Employment Law Advice FAQs

What does “24/7 Employment Law Advice” cover?

You get round-the-clock access to expert guidance on employment issues — from contracts, discipline, and grievances to redundancy, tribunals, and dismissal.

Who can use our HR service?

Any client of Altum HR, whether you’re a small business, scale-up or larger organisation, can tap into this service whenever a legal HR issue arises. Only nominated individuals within your business may liaise directly with our consultants on legal HR matters.

Is this advice legally binding?

The guidance we provide is professional and informed, but for binding legal positions (especially in court or tribunal cases), we may refer you to external solicitors or work with you or your solicitors collaboratively.

Do I pay extra for “out-of-hours” calls?

No hidden fees. Our 24/7 support is part of our comprehensive HR service retainer, available to clients as needed. Many of our clients have this level of access built into their service agreement at no extra charge, but we’ll always be clear on costs upfront.

Can I change the terms of an employee’s contract unilaterally?

Generally, no. Changes to key contract terms (like pay, hours, benefits) must be agreed with the employee. If changes are imposed without agreement, you risk breaching the contract or provoking a grievance or legal claim.

What rights do employees have regarding working hours, pay & rest breaks?

  • There are limits on the average working hours (typically 48 hours/week, unless opted out) and minimum rest breaks.

  • Employees must receive at least the National Minimum Wage (or Living Wage) depending on age and status.

  • Employers must provide payslips, and if making any payroll deductions (e.g. for pensions, tax), these must be lawful and documented.

What legal obligations do I have around discrimination?

You must not discriminate directly or indirectly against employees or job applicants based on protected characteristics (age, sex, race, religion, disability, etc.). You also have a duty to make reasonable adjustments for employees with disabilities if needed, unless doing so is disproportionate.

What about checking if someone has the right to work in the UK?

You must verify before employment that the person has a legal right to work in the UK. This involves checking original identity documents (or share codes for online status) and keeping copies. If their right to work is time-limited, you must re-check before it expires.

How soon can an employee bring a tribunal claim for unfair dismissal?

They generally have 3 months less one day from the date of dismissal to file a claim. Missing this deadline often means the claim is refused.

Can your advice help me through a tribunal?

Yes. Our HR consultants can guide you through tribunal procedures, help you prepare your case, and advise you on strategy, risk, and compliance.

What information should I have ready when I call?

Have basic details like names, dates, the nature of the issue, any documentation (e.g. contracts, letters, emails), and your company’s HR policies on hand  it speeds things up.

Are there any limitations to the employment law advice?

Yes, if your situation is highly complex or involves specialist legal areas (e.g., international law, large-scale litigation), we may recommend engaging a specialist. Also, we can’t assist with issues unrelated to employment or HR.

What happens after I use the service?

We’ll log the advice, follow up where needed, help you implement actions, update your HR documentation, and monitor outcomes. Our aim is not just to fix problems, but to prevent them recurring.
