Michelle’s Apprenticeship Journey: Confidence and Strategic Thinking
When Michelle decided to take on the Level 7 Strategic Management Apprenticeship, she knew it would be challenging but also transformative. Today, she reflects on how the experience shaped her confidence, communication and career at Altum HR.
How Apprenticeships Changed Her Approach
Michelle’s apprenticeship gave her the tools to communicate effectively with senior leaders and approach business challenges from a strategic perspective:
“It has certainly given me the confidence in my own abilities and how I use this to provide advice to clients as well as looking at things from a more strategic perspective.”
Unexpected Skills
Michelle always considered herself a strong communicator, but the apprenticeship helped her fine-tune her communication style, especially when dealing with high-level issues and adapting to different leadership styles.
Proud Moments
Completing her End Point Assessment (EPA) and achieving a distinction was a standout moment for Michelle, especially given the complexity and level of the qualification.
Support from Altum
Michelle credits Altum’s senior management team for their unwavering support throughout her journey:
“There have been some tough times over the years, but they have always been there to talk to and give advice when needed.”
As deadlines approached, Altum ensured Michelle had dedicated time to focus on her studies, even creating “focus mode” periods where colleagues knew not to interrupt.
Challenges That Built Resilience
One of the biggest challenges Michelle faced was having multiple tutor changes during her apprenticeship. Each had a different style, which was difficult at first but ultimately strengthened her resilience. Her final tutor’s support helped her achieve the grade she aimed for.
Feeling Valued
Michelle has been trusted with responsibilities that go beyond day-to-day HR tasks, including working on business and people strategy with clients and keeping projects moving – something that makes her feel truly valued.
What She Wishes People Knew
“Apprenticeships are very different from traditional learning because they’re mostly experience-based. If school was never your thing, this makes learning interesting because it’s what you do daily.”
Advice for Future Apprentices
“Definitely do it! It can be stressful studying alongside working, but it’s worth the effort. You apply what you learn straight away, and it really boosts your confidence.”
And if Michelle could put one sentence on a billboard to encourage others to choose an apprenticeship, it would be:
“Go for it!”
